Even after three years with Christ, the disciples had a very different perspective of who He was and what He came to do, than what Christ knew was real. The disciples had a faulty paradigm. Jesus worked to shift their paradigm so they could see reality. Lesson 2: Ideas Have ConsequencesAs people who are concerned about ministry to people who are poor, we must make a distinction between poverty of circumstance and poverty of mind (pauperism). Material resources can affect poverty of circumstance, but it is the truth of God’s Word that impacts the poverty of mind. Exchanging truth for a lie has consequences, not only in our behavior, but in the kind of world we create. Lesson 3: The Transforming StoryGod has given us a powerful story to tell to the nations. It is God’s story, and it has the ability to transform individual lives, lift communities out of poverty and build nations that are free, compassionate and just. We must learn to tell the whole breadth and depth of the transforming story. Lesson 4: The Power of StoryEveryone has a worldview. Every culture has a “story”, a worldview. Worldviews are powerful because they determine how we see the world, they shape our values and behaviors and they determine the kind of societies we will build. In some cases, even the Church has abandoned a biblical worldview, and the consequences have tragically influenced our understanding of the nature of the Church and the Great Commission. Lesson 5: The ABC’s of Culture: Part 1 The Web of LiesThere are fundamental building blocks of culture. Satan lies to individuals and nations by replacing Kingdom building blocks (Truth) with his counterfeit building blocks (lies), resulting in the impoverishment and enslavement of nations. The more Truth a culture embraces, the healthier it is. The more lies it embraces, the more destruction, poverty and enslavement it experiences. Lesson 6: The Kingdom of GodThe Kingdom of God is any realm where Christ the King reigns – where His will is done. His Kingdom is God’s total answer to man’s total need, and that is good news. The nature of the Kingdom of God and its members provides a framework for personal transformation that will move outward bringing transformation to communities and nations. Lesson 7: William CareyHe was an industrialist. An economist. A medical humanitarian. A media pioneer. An educator. A moral reformer. And a Christian missionary. And he did more for the transformation of the Indian subcontinent in the 19th and 20th centuries than another other individual before or since. Lesson 8: The Impact of the Wesley Revivals Before Wesley, England was in rapid decline and poised on the brink of a violent revolution. After Wesley, England experienced a remarkable social, political, moral, artistic, and religious renaissance whose influence spread beyond its borders and into Africa and India. God was able to use one man, committed to bring every area of life under the Lordship of Christ, to transform an entire culture. Lesson 9: LifeWork and Developing a Biblical Theology of VocationSustainable social development requires Christians to proactively integrate their faith and their vocation, to the end that the various sectors and spheres of society are impacted for Christ. This session is designed to help Christians begin the process of developing a Biblical theology for their vocational calling. Lesson 10: Reviving the ReformationAt a time when all the nations of the world were materially impoverished, the Protestant Reformation brought a transformation to those nations that embraced the biblical ideals and values taught by the Reformers. Those nations were some of the most free, just and compassionate societies the world has ever seen. The principles brought by our reformer fathers are valuable lessons for the church today. The Forest in the SeedWhat resources do we need for truly Christian community development, and where do these resources come from? The transformation of impoverished communities requires resources, yet our worldview determines our vision for what resources we have and which are most important. The Bible reveals God as the source of all resource. He is "Jehova Jireh," the God who provides for His creation. But do we have eyes to see this vast array of resources? Do our development activities help others discover their God-given resources or hinder them? The Forest in the Seed is a biblical exploration of the important topic of resources. The Maternal Heart of God This session from Darrow Miller's Nurturing the Nations workshop and book on the dignity of women explains how the very structure of the female body reveals the maternal heart of God. |
